"Ed Sheeran is a Twat?"

So, Ed Sheeran headlined Glastonbury...
This was very likely the biggest show of his career so far.
...And loads of people are moaning about it.

Closing the Pyramid stage tonight at Glastonbury, tune in on BBC from 21:30pm x

Apparently his guitar was out of tune at one point. That can be a legitimate complaint for some people I suppose, however, those complaining about that have probably never had the experience of playing a solo show at a festival outside in English weather. Changes in temperature, damp and heat all help to make acoustic guitars a bit wobbly sometimes.
I expect a little bit more understanding from people. Ed Sheeran being on his own, on stage means there's nowhere to hide. The fact that he was looping all of this meant he would have had to start the loop over again if he wanted to stop to tune his guitar up. From what I've heard, he still smashed the gig, so why are people complaining?

I'm no musician, but my partner, Doozer McDooze is a solo acoustic musician and he always says to me "When something goes wrong on stage you have to go with it" and  "If you make a mistake, do it twice on purpose so that it doesn't feel like a mistake"

I consider him a pretty worthy expert of being up on stage alone with ALL the things going wrong but still smashing it and having a brilliant time.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve seen Doozer break his strings or struggle with his guitar on stage, and he's got a spare one not far away, but he hasn't used it because by then, there was no point, he'd already gone into the next song with only three strings left and a big grin on his face…

I asked Facebook once a while ago what the problem with Ed Sheeran is. You would not believe the amount of stick I got for "defending" Ed Sheeran though... I actually thought I broke Facebook that day!
I felt compelled to ask why people were hating him so hard, because in just one week alone, I saw at least five or six people write off ranty statuses about what a shit bag he is with long threads of comments from people chiming in about what a twat he is but without really giving an actual reason why. I assumed he had done something truly awful, like kick an elderly person or poo on a bus, I thought, how could I have missed this kind of news?!

After reading through lots of comment threads I found out that aside from those who just don’t like his music, a lot of people were hating him, just because.
If you just hate that kind of music, that’s fine, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea and no musician will ever be everybody’s cup of tea.

We all know Ed Sheeran himself has had to deal with quite a lot of unfair judgement which is bound to happen with success, but he also got it from his celebrity peers, which can for some people, really be damaging, I remember Noel Gallagher slagging him off, for seemingly no real reason at all:
Noel Gallagher: ‘I can’t live in a world where Ed Sheeran is headlining Wembley’
“I don’t think I can live in a world where that’s even possible. When you hear that kind of polished pop and then there’s a ginger guy with a fucking guitar it seems subversive, but it’s fucking not.”

Ed handled it like a pro: Sheeran said: “I know Noel Gallagher doesn’t like my music, but I get on with him as a person, so why does it fucking matter?”

I love that attitude. and I’m glad that Ed Sheeran is where he is in his career, I love it even more since now I see Ed Sheeran headlining Glastonbury as a good "Up Yours" to all those people who think it’s cool to slag him off, to those who've doubted him, and ultimately, to everyone who thinks that a solo musician can't pull off a headline slot.

Ed Sheeran has done nothing wrong. The guy has earned the continued success he’s experiencing, he's worked hard for it and that's something to aspire to... in fact, for some musicians, that is considered inspiring.

I think it is a pivotal moment for a solo musician to headline Glastonbury. This gives hope to all the other solo acoustic guys and girls out there, doesn't it?

This whole trend of hating Ed Sheeran reeks of jealousy. I've been hearing the line a lot "There are lots of more worthy musicians out there than him" my current response to that is… Sorry mate but that's always going to be the case, if you're a musician saying this, try harder, DO better... because in this life that's what we do when we're ambitious, we go at things harder and better than we did before.
If you're not a musician and you’re saying this, how about you download all your favourite musicians and bands songs and albums online... because THAT'S how a lot of bands get some success these days. Downloads are the way to the charts, support what you love, stop moaning about what you hate.

While you're at it, Doozer's album is available to download, it can be "streamed" and listened to for free as well, you can also add it to your spotify playlist, he also has lots of demos, EP's and other earworms floating about the net:

  • Great post Birdy, enjoyed the write up but he is a twat! Tongue stuck firmly in cheek ?

  • Good piece Birdy. Ed is not necessarily my cup of java though there’s a couple of songs on his new album that I do quite like. I’m also happy to see a solo acoustic guy headline. It’s somethin’ to aspire to.
For myself though, I’m happy with a support slot. I don’t really write sing along songs an’ many are not happy…. hang on though, Radiohead seem to have done okay writing songs like that. Hope springs eternal.
See you in a field soon.

  • It makes me chuckle that people get so bent out of shape over Ed for no reason as he seems like an all round decent guy and yet are happy for people like the Kardashians to take over the world.

  • Absolutely brilliant post. Yes others are jealous of a solo musician headlining Glastonbury. .. so what? If they were so brilliant themselves then why weren’t they there doing the same spot. Obviously not good enough.
I had the privilege of seeing him 2 days earlier at the O2. I don’t like all of his music but he is a damn good artist and not up himself like some we see nowadays. Good luck to the Suffolk boy. Have admiration for him all the way.

  • When I saw your post I wondered what would constitute Ed Sheeran as a twat and if in fact that was a twit or a tweet gone bad. Living in America we see plenty of that these days emanating from a golden toilet bowl in the middle of the night in Washington Palace. Then when you related it to Doozers determination I got it. I can imagine the illusion as he beats out another rendition of Not Going Back to That using only 3 strings and sleight of hand Doozitudes to get him through. It’s very effective and quite magical really ;) in the real world of quantum physics unheard of things, even entire realities materialize just from Sheer will. ..or Doozers and Sheerans.
